Discovering Spain’s Finest Vineyards: A Wine Journey Through Rioja and Ribera del Duero
As 2017 came to a close, we celebrated in the best way possible — with an unforgettable wine trip to Spain. This adventure took us deep into two of Spain’s most prestigious wine regions: Rioja and Ribera del Duero, both legendary for their Tempranillo-based wines and world-class culinary culture.
Before reaching Rioja, we paused in the acclaimed Ribera del Duero wine region, where Tempranillo reigns supreme. Unlike Rioja’s famous blends, here Tempranillo is often vinified on its own, producing bold, structured reds with remarkable depth. We enjoyed a gourmet tasting experience, perfectly paired with the area’s robust wines, setting the tone for the days ahead.
After savoring the flavors of Ribera del Duero, we continued to Logroño, the capital of La Rioja, where we rested for the night. This lively city, known for its tapas streets and wine culture, was the perfect base for our wine exploration.
The next morning, we embarked on a comprehensive Rioja wine tour, indulging not only in exceptional wines but also in the region’s rich gastronomy. Starting in Haro, the historic heart of Rioja Alta, we visited iconic wineries and discovered cellars where age-old traditions meet modern innovation.
Our journey continued westward to the elegant Marqueses area, home to some of Rioja’s most prestigious estates. Every stop revealed new nuances of Tempranillo, from youthful, fruit-forward reds to complex Gran Reservas aged to perfection.
November proved to be an ideal time to explore Spain’s vineyards. With harvest season winding down, the crowds were minimal, the temperatures were pleasant, and the countryside was awash in autumn colors. The vineyards glowed with shades of gold, amber, and crimson — a breathtaking backdrop for tasting and touring.
Before concluding our trip, we made a short but memorable visit to Alcalá de Henares, the birthplace of Miguel de Cervantes, author of Don Quixote. This cultural stop was the perfect complement to our wine-filled journey.
Closing a Milestone Year
This extraordinary experience was more than just a wine trip; it marked the perfect conclusion to the very first year of Vins Oenotourism Events. From world-renowned wineries to Spanish culinary delights and vibrant landscapes, our 2017 Rioja and Ribera del Duero wine tour was a celebration of travel, culture, and the timeless allure of Tempranillo.
