South Africa: A Journey Through Wine, Nature, and Wonder

Africa had long been a destination on our travel list — a continent we had always dreamed of visiting. What better opportunity than to combine the wine regions of the Western Cape with South Africa’s iconic landmarks and a safari in Kruger Park?

South Africa is the “oldest” wine-producing region of the New World. More than four centuries ago, the first vineyards were planted here, laying the foundation for what is now known as the Western Cape Winelands.

Upon arrival in Cape Town, we explored the vibrant city before taking the cable car up Table Mountain — blessed with perfectly clear weather. From there, we continued to the colorful and artistic Bo-Kaap neighborhood. Our hotel was located in the lively Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, where an evening stroll was simply irresistible.

The following day, we drove south to the legendary Cape of Good Hope — a place that once symbolized hope and adventure for visionary merchants of the past. The views over the Atlantic Ocean and surrounding mountains were breathtaking. Naturally, we couldn’t skip a visit to the charming penguins at Boulders Bay. And this is where we began our wine-tasting journey, in the renowned Constantia Valley, where after a long and gourmet-style lunch, we delighted in the elegant wines of Klein Constantia — a perfect introduction to the region’s rich viticultural heritage.

Next came our visit to the wine regions of Swartland and Paarl. The highlight was undoubtedly our visit to Sadie Family Estate, where we were personally welcomed by Eben Sadie and his son for an exceptional vineyard tour. Their philosophy of life deeply influences their winemaking — a rare and inspiring encounter that ranks among our best wine experiences, not only in South Africa but in Europe as well. The day concluded with a visit to the Afrikaans Language Monument (Afrikaanse Taalmonument), majestically overlooking Paarl.

The following morning, we headed north to the Franschhoek wine region — whose name, meaning “French Corner,” harks back to the Huguenot settlers who arrived centuries ago. With perfect weather on our side, we enjoyed the stunning scenery and the picturesque village, full of charming boutiques and graceful architecture. A memorable highlight was our visit and lunch at Rupert & Rothschild Vignerons, an estate that perfectly combines elegance and tradition.

Our final days in Cape Town were dedicated to Somerset West and Stellenbosch, perhaps the most renowned wine region in South Africa. Vergelegen Wine Estate was extraordinary — a 3,200-hectare property devoted to protecting local wildlife and nature. Within its grounds lie 18 exquisite gardens — far too many to explore in one visit, leaving us with the perfect excuse to return. We concluded the day with a tasting at Cavalli Estate, beautifully set in the heart of the Cape Winelands.

Throughout our stay in Cape Town, we took great care in selecting our dinner venues — and were rewarded with exceptional cuisine, both local and international.

Of course, no visit to South Africa would be complete without a journey into the wild. Our next stop: Kruger Park. We stayed in a charming lodge on the park’s edge, overlooking the bush. The setting was magical — we watched mammals, primates, and birds pass by, sometimes even through the lodge itself. Our rangers that guided us inside the gates were outstanding, sharing deep knowledge of the park’s ecosystem and its fascinating inhabitants. Along the way, we were fortunate to encounter the Big Five several times — with the majestic white rhino making only a single, memorable appearance.

Having explored nearly all the major vineyards of the Old World, this first venture beyond it — surrounded by South Africa’s landscapes, wildlife, and wine — left us with unforgettable memories… and lasting tastes.
