Bordeaux Wine Trip 2024

An Unforgettable Journey Through France’s Legendary Wine Region

No matter how many times we travel to Bordeaux, we never get tired of returning to this extraordinary city. Each visit brings something new while keeping the timeless charm that makes Bordeaux one of the most captivating wine destinations in the world.

Just like our previous trips, our itinerary followed a familiar rhythm, yet with delightful twists that made this journey unforgettable.

After landing at Mérignac Airport, we began our adventure with a short drive to Cadillac, where we met the welcoming Dubourdieu family. Their hospitality always provides the perfect introduction to the history, flavors, and traditions of the Bordeaux wine region.

From there, we continued to the renowned Château Smith Haut Lafitte. Beyond its exquisite tasting experience, we were honored once again to meet the elegant Madame Florence Cathiard, whose passion for winemaking adds a personal touch to every visit. Our first evening concluded with a relaxing hotel check-in and a twilight stroll through the enchanting streets of Bordeaux city.

The next morning, we set off north to explore the prestigious Médoc appellation. Our first stop was the historic Château Talbot, known for its deep respect for the land and its striking new cellars inspired by family trees—a symbolic tribute to their ancestors.

We paused in Pauillac for a leisurely lunch, passing by the legendary vineyards of Château Lafite Rothschild along the way. No trip to the Médoc would be complete without a visit to the iconic Château Margaux. This time, I finally understood the quiet grandeur and balance of this Premier Grand Cru Classé—a masterpiece that had previously escaped my less-experienced palate.

Crossing the river to the Right Bank, we immersed ourselves in the beauty of the Saint-Émilion wine region. We began with Château Larmande, a Grand Cru Classé with roots tracing back to the 15th century, and then wandered through the cobbled streets of the medieval village of Saint-Émilion, arguably the most picturesque village in Bordeaux.

Our exploration continued at Château de Ferrand, another esteemed Grand Cru Classé, founded in 1702 and now owned by the Bich family, famous for the BIC brand. This blend of history, innovation, and passion made the day one of the highlights of our journey.

On Sunday, we took a break from vineyard visits to experience La Cité du Vin, Bordeaux’s world-class wine museum. For anyone passionate about wine, it’s an essential stop—an immersive journey through the heritage and craft of winemaking worldwide.

That evening, we gathered for a memorable dinner in a cozy wine cellar, surrounded by bottles that told their own stories. It was the perfect finale to an incredible tour.

Before saying goodbye to Bordeaux, we visited the historic Château Pape Clément, a Grand Cru Classé of Graves whose first harvest dates back to 1252. Touring its vineyards, castle interiors, and state-of-the-art cellars felt like stepping back in time. As we sipped their elegant wines, it was easy to imagine knights on horseback delivering news—or perhaps a cask of wine—to noblemen.

We left Bordeaux filled with gratitude, richer in experience and memories. Each return trip only deepens my appreciation for this remarkable region, proving that Bordeaux’s allure never fades.
